The First Decision: Burial or Cremation?

This is one of the major decisions which must be made when making funeral arrangements, and for most families, the answer depends on a variety of things. For example, if the family has traditionally chosen burial in previous generations, they may again decide to choose earth burial, simply because the family own plots together in a local cemetery.

We want to ensure you are aware of the benefits of both when choosing between cremation or burial. We have listed and explained some of the main benefits of cremation and a traditional burial.

Benefits of Cremation

Cremation, as you may know, is the accelerated reduction of the remains to ash, traditionally through the process of heat. If you’re considering cremation, we suggest you take the time to learn about the benefits.

Cost of Cremation

One of the biggest benefits of cremation vs burial is pricing. Typically, the cost of a cremation service is about one-third the cost of a traditional burial service. Because a cremation service does not require the purchase of a cemetery plot, headstone, casket or burial vault, your family can use these savings to plan a more meaningful memorial service or celebration of life.

Simplicity

When it comes to comparing cremation or burial, your family may not initially consider how simplicity is a benefit. When a family buries a loved one, they often hold a traditional funeral service. In this case, you will have to organize pallbearers, plan the visitation and service, coordinate with the cemetery and much more. All of this must be completed promptly before the remains can be buried. With a cremation service though, your family has the benefit of simplicity when it comes to planning. After the remains have been cared for, you can take your time to deal with the initial grief before planning a service to honor your loved one.

Cemetery Availability

Certain cemeteries offer beautiful settings to lay a loved one to rest. Others are becoming increasingly full and have minimal space remaining. In both cases, this can place a premium on the cost of burial in the cemetery and add to your family’s funeral expenses. Although you can choose to bury cremated remains, many families choose to store the ashes at home or spread them in a meaningful place.

Benefits of Burial

Burial on the other hand, is the more traditional method of disposition. This generally involves a graveside service, where a caskset and vault are place into the ground. Again, before choosing burial it is important to understand the benefits that it offers.

A Permanent Place to Revisit

When you choose to bury a loved one’s remains, your family has a permanent place to revisit. This means when you want to feel close to your loved one or spend time with them, you have a special place to return to. When remains are cremated and the ashes are spread, you might not feel the same level of closeness that you do when visiting a gravesite.

Traditional

If you ask most people what they think of when they envision a funeral service, it often includes a burial service afterwards. Many people consider burial to be the traditional method of caring for a loved one’s remains. If you or your family have strong religious beliefs, then a traditional funeral will most likely be the most appropriate choice.

Respecting the Deceased

A common misconception is that cremation uses fire to burn the deceased’s remains. Although this is not how the process works, many people still feel uncomfortable at the thought of using fire to reduce remains. On the other hand, a burial dresses the deceased in their best clothes and places them within a beautiful casket. Because of this, many people feel that burial is more respectful to the deceased’s remains.

We encourage all families to consider whichever option suits them best at the time of need. Should you have any questions, feel free to contact us. We will be pleased to share our knowledge and expertise with you.
