As a former student of Mr. McDermott, I just want to say thank you for being one of my favorite teachers. You are fondly remembered. Rest in peace. Your influence on many lives was very well received and your smile is remembered.

My condolences to the entire McDermott family. May you find strength in Jesus. "We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord." - Corinthians 5:8

Professor McDermott was a wonderful man and a caring educator. I worked with him at Wilson College and often chatted with him and his wife when they were dining out, especially down at the Texas Lunch. Many years ago, I also had a biology class at Wilson with his one daughter (I believe her name was Meaghan). Rest in peace, my friend!

John became my friend in 2011 when we met at a Monday morning session of the Cumberland Valley Woodcarving Club. He was interested in my career with the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). We soon learned that we shared a common interest of protecting public health and safety with respect to operation of nuclear reactors. John taught reactor physics at Penn State University and journeyed to Budapest, Hungary, for a meeting of colleagues to discuss the 1979 accident at Three Mile Island Nuclear Power Plant (TMI) in Pennsylvania. I had some familiarity with this accident as an employee of the NRC. We enjoyed an hour of each other’s company that day. As a member of the Institute for Retired Persons (IRP), John helped involve me as a member of panel discussions he led, one on the TMI accident and one on wood carving. Both these panels were well-received by IRP members. John was full of humor and I relish the jokes he shared with me. He would regale us with items from his large collection of Gaelic dialogue. In addition, John was pleased to share photos of his carvings and hunting exploits. John was a great friend.

Thoughts and prayers going your way. May the love of God and your many friends comfort you during this difficult time, and the weeks to follow. Fran & John were known from the History Club as well as the IRP group.
