Obituary for Donald O'Neil

Donald O'Neil
Donald Eugene O’Neil, 90, of Chambersburg, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Menno Haven. Born May 16, 1927 in Oswego, NY, he was a son of the late James E. and Anna A. Breitbeck O’Neil. His beloved wife, Mary G. Morabito O’Neil, preceded him in death on January 10, 2013.

A US Navy veteran, Donald served honorably with the Seabees in the Pacific Theatre of WWII and in China with the 6th Marine Division. He was awarded two battle stars. Following his discharge from the Navy, Donald was employed as a Stevedore at the port of Oswego on Lake Ontario. He was later employed at James River Corporation as a foreman until his retirement in 1989 after 44 years of service. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and also a member of the VFW Post 1599, Knights of Columbus Council #1426, and the Landis-McCleaf Detachment, Marine Corps League, all in Chambersburg. He enjoyed gardening, going to the casino, walking, and taking day trips.

Donald is survived by three daughters, M. Donna Brechbill (Delbert) of New Franklin, Laurie Ann Short (Gerald) of Chambersburg, and Jean Louise Manns (Glenn) of Chambersburg; six grandchildren, Elizabeth Felix (Todd), Kristin Mcllelan, Jennifer Wenger (Christian), Trisha Goshorn (Jonathan), Matthew Manns (Cara) and Kendra Manns; 15 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Jack Fatiga. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and William O’Neil, and three sisters, Elizabeth O’Neil, Margaret Ahart, and Nancy Fatiga.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA, 17201. Fr. Brian Olkowski will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Corpus Christi Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:30 – 10:30 AM at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA.
