Obituary for Ronald L. "Ron" Hughes

Ronald Leroy Hughes, age 83, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at the Chambersburg Hospital Saturday, October 27, 2018, with his family by his side. Born in Hopewell, Bedford Co., PA , he was the son of the late Roy D. and Florence Snyder Hughes.
A patriot, Ron served his country in three branches of the armed forces, the Army, Marines, and Air National Guard. He served honorably during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Marine Corps and lastly retiring in 1989 after 35 years of combined service in the U.S. Air Force National Guard. Ron worked at Mack Truck as a machinist for 30 years, retiring in 1991. After retirement he worked part-time for F & M Trust as a courier for 12 years. Mr. Hughes was a member of the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren for 54 years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 46, a life member of the Marine Corps League, and longtime member of the Hamilton Ruritan Club, serving as a past Secretary and taking care of renting the picnic area. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, bowling, watching the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers play, but most of all he cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving is his beloved wife of 64 years, Betty Jane Reasner Hughes, whom he married October 16, 1954; two daughters, Rhonda DeShong (husband Gary) and Wendy Shanholtz, both of Chambersburg, PA; four grandchildren, Tamara Sheridan (husband Joseph Bradly), Brandi Glenn-Akers (husband Jonathan), Terra Funston (husband Richard), and Tyler Shanholtz (wife TiAuna); eleven great-grandchildren; two siblings, Kenneth Hughes of Glen Burnie, MD and Patricia Eutzy (husband Ronald) of Dover, PA; and number of cousins and nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Clifford, Frank, Clair, and Marjorie.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 31, 2018, at 11 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Pastor Joel F. Nogle will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Military honors will be rendered after the service by members of the VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. Interment will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Chambersburg Church of the Brethren, 260 S. 4th St., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
