Alma Goetz

August 26, 1918 — January 14, 2018

Alma Susan Niswander Goetz, age 99, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at 10:48 p.m. at The Shook Home, where she had resided for the past five years. She was born near Greencastle on August 26, 1918, the youngest of seven children of the late Rev. Albert Martin Niswander and Alta Sheely. She was the last of her immediate family.

On September 15, 1946 she married Richard Sprecher Goetz in Hagerstown, MD. After marriage she took up residence in Lemasters with her father for a short time before moving to her first home on Elder Street. To meet the needs of a growing family she moved a few years later to a larger home at 514 North Franklin Street where she resided for almost 50 years. Following the death of her husband on June 12, 2002, she moved to Sanibel Lane where she lived for eight years before moving into The Quarters at the Shook Home.

In 1936 Alma graduated from the Lemasters High School. In her early years she was employed at the former Heinz Company where she met her future husband. She later worked at the J. Schoeneman Company. She sold Stanley products and Avon products for a number of years and volunteered with AARP. She was last employed at the J.C. Penney Company. She was a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Alma enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening, RV camping, and spending winters in Florida. During her later years she was rarely seen without a puzzle book on her lap and a pen in her hand. She remained active for her age, even delivering Meals on Wheels at the age of eighty-five. She was a good friend, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Alma will be sadly missed by her six children: Richard L. (Hsui-Li) Goetz of Burke, VA; Sheryl (Mike) Fisher of Chambersburg; James C. (Sharon) Goetz of Chambersburg; Perry L. (Debra) Goetz of Chambersburg; Sheila L. Goetz and life partner Thomas Krueger of Boulder, CO; and Mark A. Goetz of Aurora, CO. Her ten grandchildren include: Dennis Goetz, Adam Fisher, Kiely Fisher, Brea Dennis, Sarah Benshoff, Susan Goetz, Cory Goetz, Emily Brookens, Hayden Goetz, and Jake Goetz. She was also great-grandmother to Kora and Gabrian Fisher; Paris and Psy’renee Dennis; Braxton and Brooke Benshoff; Hannah and Ethan Goetz; Sawyer, Boden, and Mannix Brookens.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Micah Hayes Fisher, and five brothers and one sister: Marvin E. Niswander, Roy E. Niswander, Ethel M. Faust, Galen C. Niswander, Rev. Glenn M. Niswander, and Frederick E. Niswander.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
