Barbara Jean Thompson Smith, 87, formerly of St. Joseph Lane, Chambersburg, PA and Fairway Drive East, Fayetteville, PA passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Penn Hall where she resided for the past six years. Former residents of Rockville, MD, she and her late husband moved to Fayetteville in 1989. Born August 2, 1923 in Muncie, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Davis Jeffrey and Lillian I. Wright Thompson.
During WWII, she worked for the United States Air Force Air Service Command in Dayton, OH. Later she was employed by the National Lumber Manufacturer’s Association in Washington, DC where she met her husband Charles. They were married June 24, 1950 in Washington, DC. In 1968, Mrs. Smith began working for Sears, retiring in 1985. She was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, the Valley Art Association in Hagerstown, MD, and the Studio Art Club in Waynesboro. Her beloved husband, Charles L. Smith, preceded her in death on February 21, 2005.
She is survived by a daughter, Elaine C.S. Neville and son-in-law Gary S. Neville of Columbus, IN; a son, Bryan J. Smith of Hagerstown, MD; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William R. Thompson of White Sulphur Spings, WV and and Tom L. Thompson of Rowlett, TX.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 20, 2011 in the Penn Hall Chapel, 1425 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. Chaplain Brenda Doyle will officiate. Private interment will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery, Muncie, Indiana.
