Barbara Reamy Strite, 76, of Chambersburg, PA died on March 29, 2016 at her home. She was born July 11, 1939 in Baltimore, MD. She was the daughter of the late Dorothea S. and Howard B. Reamy. The family were members of the Lutheran Church of the Holy Comforter of Baltimore.
Barb was a 1957 graduate of Eastern High School in Baltimore. She graduated summa cum laude from Dickinson College in 1961, with a major in English and minor in Latin. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa her junior year. She was president of her Pi Beta Phi sorority, president of the Pan-Hellenic Council, the junior sophister and a member of Wheel and Chain.
Following graduation, Barb taught Latin in the Cheltenham Township School District in suburban Philadelphia for five years. While teaching she pursued graduate studies in Latin at the University of Pennsylvania.
From 1973 to 1986 the family lived in Gettysburg, PA. This phase of her life was devoted to child rearing. She was a Cub Scout den mother, tennis player and runner. In 1986 the family moved to Chambersburg. Barb then became the business manager for Cumberland Valley Orthopaedic Associates, a position she held until retirement.
Barb was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ. She served as the chairman of the library committee for many years.
Barb was a dedicated oil painter and a member of the Franklin County Art Alliance. She was a flower gardener and craft maker. She was a member of the Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary and a past member of the Chambersburg Afternoon Club. Barb was a lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan, who attended their first game in 1954. She derived great joy from annual family vacations to the Outer Banks, NC, especially her time reading on the beach. She was a regular solver of the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle. Barb played in Gettysburg and Chambersburg bridge groups for many years.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, James A. Strite, Jr. and four children – Kristen Weber (husband, James) of Pittsburgh, PA; James A. Strite III (wife, Pamela) of Philadelphia, PA; Lisa Jedlicka, (husband, Keith) of Alva, FL, and David Strite (wife, Katherine) of Charlottesville, VA. She has five grandchildren. She also is survived by her brother William H. Reamy of Baltimore.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ at 11 AM Saturday April 2nd with Rev. Mark Ruzicka officiating. The family will receive guests following the service.
