Bertha Duke

Bertha E. Mowen Duke, 94, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Sunday morning, January 19, 2014 at her home. Born April 26, 1919 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Frank R. and Bertha E. Cramer Mowen. A graduate of the Pottsville High School and a homemaker most of her adult life, Mrs. Duke was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, a life member of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and a member of the Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She had volunteered with Meals on Wheels for twenty-five years. Her husband of more than forty years, John E. Duke, preceded her in death in 1983.

She is survived by her son, John E. Duke, Jr. and wife Rita (Brindle) Duke of New Franklin; four grandchildren, Elizabeth and husband John Boyanowski, Michelle and husband Jeremy Rebok, Monica and husband Bradley Heinbaugh, and Nick and wife Megan (Thomas) Duke; four great-grandchildren, Landon and Atley Rebok, Madison Duke, Jaxson Heinbaugh; a great-granddaughter to be born in March; a brother, Kenneth (Joyce) Mowen of Shippensburg; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and six sisters.

Funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM Thursday, January 23, 2014 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Dr. Neal O. Hively officiating. Interment will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:30-11:30 AM Thursday at the funeral home.
