Betty Cramer

August 11, 1921 — July 15, 2016

Betty Jessell Cramer, age 94, passed away on Friday evening, July 15, 2016, at the Chambersburg Hospital.

She was presently a resident of The Manor at Penn Hall. She formerly lived at 951 S. Fifth Street in Chambersburg.

Born August 11, 1921 she was the youngest daughter of the late Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Talhelm) Jessell. She grew up at 414 East Washington Street and attended Buchanan School. She graduated from the former Chambersburg High School with the class of 1940.

Her husband Paul E. (Buzz) Cramer, whom she married on April 4, 1942, passed away February 1, 2001. She was the last of her immediate family. She had a brother Monroe, and sisters Rosalie Casey, Kerrean Miller, Jean Lauver, and Ruth Gelsinger.

She is survived by her beloved family; daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Penny) Buckus, son-in-law, Tom, and granddaughter Amy, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Betty was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church, and the Alda Bower Sunday School Class. She also sang for many years with the 3M’s choir at the church. She was the Chairman of the Kitchen Committee, and helped to plan many lunches after funeral services at the church, making cinnamon buns for the folks who helped prepare the food.

She was a charter member of The Order of Amaranth, No. 139, and the Martha Custis Chapter, No. 342 Order of the Eastern Star. She also served as a volunteer at the Chambersburg Hospital for over 25 years spending many of those years in the Snack Bar. She was a life member of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She was employed at the former Endicott Johnson Shoe Store, South Main Street, Chambersburg, retiring after 25 years.

Betty was a very loving and kind person. She would help you in any way that she could. She was devoted to her family and friends, and will be missed by the many lives she touched.

She enjoyed making Christmas cookies and sharing them with others, going to Cowan’s Gap for all day picnics, playing cards with friends and family, going to the beach in September, bowling on leagues, taking her “grand dog” Bailey for walks, and attending with Buzz anything at school or at church that Amy was involved in.

Friends are invited to celebrate her life at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 23, 2016 at First United Methodist Church in Chambersburg. Rev. Catherine Boileau and Rev. Donald Nolder will officiate. Private interment, prior to the service, will be in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Friday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA, and immediately following the service on Saturday at the church. Members of the Martha Custis Chapter, No. 342 Order of the Eastern Star will conduct an Eastern Star service at 7:30 PM Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to First United Methodist Church, 225 South Second Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201, to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA 17201, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
