Betty S. Newman, 92, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Monday, September 25, 2017 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born February 8, 1925 in Franklin County, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd and Helen Myrtle Burnes Sleighter. Mrs. Newman was a graduate of the former Chambersburg High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the former Shippensburg State Teacher’s College. She was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring after 32 ½ years of service. She was a member of Salem United Brethren Church where she enjoyed attending Sunday school. She was an active volunteer with AARP Tax Aide, the Red Cross Blood Mobile, the Chambersburg Food Pantry, the former Piney Mountain Home, and with Meals on Wheels where she helped in the kitchen. She was a member of NARFE #1063 and was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies. She enjoyed Word Search and Crossword puzzles; sewing; reading Nora Roberts novels; and in the last few years arts and crafts; as well as coloring pictures for her great-grandson Percy. Her husband, Harry Franklin Newman, preceded her in death on November of 1984.
She is survived by her son, Steven J. Newman and wife Monica of Chambersburg; three grandsons, Tyler J. Newman, Andrew Lee Rupert (Miranda), and Nathan W. Rupert (Jenna Carter); and three great-grandsons, Tristan Newman, Dante Newman, and Percy Rupert. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Clyde Sleighter.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, September 29, 2017 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Pastor Jason E. Bakker will officiate. Interment will follow at Lincoln Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Thursday and from Noon-1:00 PM Friday at the funeral home.
