Betty Saunders Fahnestock

February 4, 1924 — September 17, 2015

Betty V. Saunders Fahnestock, age 91, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at the Penn Hall Nursing Center. Born February 4, 1924 in Chambersburg, PA, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Lina Ridgely Saunders.
Mrs. Fahnestock was a 1942 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School, a 1968 graduate of the former Shippensburg State College, and the University of Maryland with a Master’s degree in Library Science. She was a school librarian for 15 years, in the Prince George’s County Schools. Mrs. Fahnestock was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, the Maryland Retired Teachers Association, and AARP. Mrs. Fahnestock enjoyed reading, traveling, and spending time with family.
She is survived by her daughter, Annette Marie Smith (husband David) of Newville, PA; three grandchildren, David L. Smith (wife Heather) of Frederick, MD, James C. Smith of Tall Timbers, MD, and Jayme Block (wife Megan) of Salisbury, MD; and six great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Fahnestock, a son, James D. Fahnestock, a sister, Dorothy “Peggy” Apple, and a brother, Roy D. “Tom” Saunders, Jr.
A Memorial Service will be held to honor her life on Monday, September 21, 2015, at 2 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Garry Culler will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home on Monday. A private interment was held in Norland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the American Cancer Society, 924 N. Colonial Ave. York, PA 17403 or to the Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, 2509 Black Gap Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
