Bonita H. “Bonnie” Thomas, age 82, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Monday, February 12, 2018, at Menno Haven. Born April 8, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Lester J. and Mary Walterick Hanes.
Bonnie worked as an elementary school teacher for 25 years in the Chambersburg Area School District, she was also pre-school teacher at St. John’s Church and had been a Sunday School teacher at First United Methodist, where she was a member. She was a member of the Falling Spring Chapter of AARP and the PA State Teacher’s Association. Bonnie enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and particularly going to their athletic contests and cheering for the Philadelphia Phillies. One of her favorite songs was God Bless America by Kate Smith, Bonnie always wanted to hear it at Yankee games on TV.
Surviving is her husband, Robert “Bob” Thomas, two sons, Craig D. Thomas (wife Carol) of Chambersburg, PA and Eric L. Thomas (wife Maureen) of Ijamsville, MD; five grandchildren, Lindsey, Hayley, and Charles Thomas and Kyle (wife Kayleigh) and Zachary Thomas; and a great-granddaughter, Ellie Marie Poisel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Randall Hanes and Mary Jane Tritle.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018, at 11 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA, where Rev. Cathy Boileau will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2595 Interstate Dr. Suite 100, Harrisburg, PA 17110 or to the First United Methodist Church, 225 S 2nd St, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
