C. William Koons

C. William “Bill” Koons, age 94, formerly of Grandview Avenue, Chambersburg, PA, passed away Tuesday evening, August 27, 2013 at Penn Hall Nursing Center. Born December 24, 1918 in Mont Alto, PA, he was the son of the late Charles Frank and Ruth I. Saylor Koons. Bill was a member of the Class of 1937 at the former Chambersburg High School and served in the US Navy during WWII and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Early in his life he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad and then from 1948 until his retirement in 1979 he was employed by the United States Post Office. During his employment with the Post Office he carried mail in the west end of Chambersburg for nineteen years. Following retirement, Bill went on to work at the former John O. Park Funeral Home, the former Park-Geisel Funeral Home, and then at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center until June of 2003. He was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chambersburg; a life member of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW and held membership in Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, Falling Spring Chapter 2840 AARP, and NARFE Chapter 1063, all in Chambersburg. His wife, Dorothy Bietsch Koons, whom he married October 25, 1941, preceded him in death on August 30, 2011.


He is survived by his daughter, Judith K. (and husband, Dennis) Cump, of Chambersburg; four granddaughters, Denise McLucas, Tina Klenzing, Becky Cump, all of Chambersburg, and Jodi Pyle of Hanover; nine great grandchildren, Andrew, Carley and Emma McLucas; Joshua, Jordan, and Jamie Klenzing, Sarah Cump, Alexander and Jenna Pyle; four great-great grandchildren, Camden and Blake Klenzing, Gage McCarthy, and Jackson McLucas; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia L. Koons and Jane Cline; and two brothers, Louis and David Koons.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, August 30, 2013 in the Chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with viewing two hours prior to the service. Chaplain Brenda Doyle and Rev. Charles Kampmeyer will officiate. Interment with military honors by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow in Norland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Penn Hall, 1425 Philadelphia Avenue or to First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 W. Washington Street, both in Chambersburg, PA 17201.
