Carl W. Cook, "Cookie", age 78 of 936 Geyer Drive, Chambersburg, PA, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Thursday, June 20, 2013 after an 8 year battle with Parkinson's Disease and 2 years of melanoma cancer. He was born on July 25, 1934 in Chambersburg, a son of the late Ralph D. and Miriam E. (Culler) Cook. Carl was born and raised on the family farm and attended the Sharpe School, being the only pupil in the 8th grade. He went on to graduate from the former Chambersburg High School with the class of 1952.
He began his career in the grocery business in 1954 working as a delivery boy at Carl's Market on the square in Chambersburg. When they moved to Lincoln Way East, he became an assistant manager. He then went to work for ACME Market for 21 years as a manager and worked in Chambersburg, Shippensburg, and the Harrisburg area. When ACME left this division, Carl worked at Sunnyway Foods for 14 years as a manager. After retirement, he continued to work at Sunnyway for 14 more years part-time as a stocker until his illness. Carl loved people and enjoyed his career working with the public.
Carl was a previous member of The Open Door Church in Chambersburg where he served as a deacon and an usher. He is currently a member of Emmanuel Baptist Temple in Hagerstown, Md. Carl loved going to church even during his illness. In the past, Carl volunteered for several organizations such as The American Cancer Society and Meals on Wheels. He stocked the Country Store at Penn Hall with groceries for 7 1/2 years. For many years he bowled in the Inter-Church Mixed Bowling League and also bowled in the senior leagues at Park Lanes and Nellie Fox. He loved football and baseball, the Forty Niners and Baltimore Orioles being his favorite teams. Carl was very competitive and loved to play the card game, Rook. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, even when he was ill.
Carl's first wife, Nancy E. (Ruse) Cook, passed away on Oct. 24, 1982 after 27 years of marriage. He is survived by his second wife, Janice C (Hogue) Cook, who he married on April 14, 1984. He is also survived by a daughter, Cindy D. (Steve) Fisher of Hampstead, NC; two sons, Rodney L. Cook of Palmyra, and Jeffrey A. (Carla) Cook of Chambersburg; seven grandchildren, Lucretia (Glenn) Kirst of Wisconsin, Whitney (Matt) McQuade of Virginia, Lauren (Jeremy) Peters, Adam, and Heather Cook of Chambersburg, Ashley and Tylere Cook of Palmyra; and two great-granddaughters, Mackenzie and Madelyn Kirst of Wisconsin. Carl has two siblings, Rev. Ronald L. (Lois) Cook and Faye L. (Jack) Fisher of Chambersburg and eight nieces. He also leaves behind his "little girl", Snowball, a Bichon Frise who stayed by his side during the end of his life. In addition to his parents and first wife, Carl was preceded in death by his sister and brother-in-law, Charles and Mary Jane (Cook) Kuhn and a nephew, Mark Fisher.
Carl's funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Emmanuel Baptist Temple, 16221 National Pike (Route 40 west), Hagerstown, MD with Rev. Jerry Traister and Pastor Curtis King officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Chambersburg. A viewing will be held on Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA from 6-8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
