Carol Ann (Edwards) Butz

Chambersburg

Carol Ann Edwards Butz, 85, of Chambersburg, PA passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025 at Brookview Menno Haven. Born on February 22, 1939 in Chambersburg, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Dwight M. and Violet (Ackerson) Edwards.

She was a graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School with the Class of 1957. In 1957, Carol was crowned Franklin County Apple Blossom Queen.  

Carol and her husband, Samuel E. Butz, were married September 13, 1959. They shared a wonderful life together, growing their close-knit family and spending time with them every summer in Outer Banks, NC for the last 45 years. They enjoyed traveling abroad and going on river cruises together. Mr. Butz passed away July 10, 2021. 

Carol and Sam also enjoyed playing tennis, skiing and golfing together. She continued to golf throughout her life and was part of the Ladies 18 Hole Golf Group at the Chambersburg Country Club and won several events. Carol also enjoyed playing bridge both for fun and competitively. She was known as the ultimate hostess and loved entertaining her family and friends. 

Carol was a lifelong member of The Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring in Chambersburg, where she served on multiple committees. She was on the Board of Directors for Women in Need and the Coyle Free Library. She was also a member of the Chambersburg Afternoon and Garden Clubs. The Chambersburg Memorial YMCA always held a special place in her heart. Her father, Dr. Edwards, was one of the Founding Fathers of the YMCA. For multiple decades, Carol faithfully served on the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees. She held the secretary office for most of her years on the Board of Trustees and was an instrumental member. She was a member of the Heritage Club and in 2016 she received the Service to Youth Award. Carol’s children and grandchildren continue to be involved with the YMCA carrying on a fourth-generation legacy with the organization. 

She is survived by four children Brian (Pam) Butz, Douglas (Tammy) Butz, all of Chambersburg, Mary Beth “Missy” (Keith) Hammond of Concord, and Jennifer (Samuel) Hopple of Chambersburg; siblings, Gerald Edwards of Chambersburg and Elaine Davis of Jupiter, FL; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Edwards. 

A memorial service will be held, 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 1, 2025 in the Presbyterian Church of the Falling Spring, 221 N. Main St. Chambersburg, PA 17201 with Mr. Brad Hill, Director of Worship and Discipleship officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Saturday morning in the church. A private family interment will be held in Norland Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
