Carol Osen

Mrs. Carol Osen, 76, of Chambersburg, PA passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 27, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was a valiant fighter for 28 years in her battle against breast cancer. Carol was born on January 17, 1937 in Bethlehem, PA, the daughter of the late Charles Martin Sandwick, Sr. and Jessie Ramsay Sandwick.
Carol graduated from the Easton High School in 1954 and from the Pennsylvania State University in 1958. She completed post-graduate work at Penn State and Indiana University of PA. Upon graduating from Penn State, she served as a speech therapist for the Northampton County Public Schools, Perry County Public Schools for two and a half years, and the Shippensburg Area Public Schools for two years. Carol finished her career in the Chambersburg Area School District, having served for 27 years as the speech therapy department chair, where she retired in 1993. A member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, Carol served in various offices throughout her retirement years, including service as the financial secretary as well as service on the Administrative Council and the Pastor-Parish Relations Council. She was very active with the ladies craft group, making sleeping bags for the homeless as well as creating various crafts to be sold at the church’s annual craft fair. She was also a member of the Chambersburg Hospital Auxiliary. She had served as a hospital volunteer in the Oncology Clinic and was a former Reach to Recovery Volunteer at the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed the hobby of weaving, making towels, shawls, dish cloths, lap robes and other weaving craft creations of her own design. She won a variety of ribbons at the Franklin and Cumberland County annual fairs. First and foremost in her life, in addition to her church activities, was the love of her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild were the center of her life during her retirement years.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John S. Osen, Sr., whom she married May 23, 1959 in Duryea, PA; her children, John S. Osen, Jr. (wife Geralyn) of Eldridge, IA, David M. Osen (wife Randi) of San Diego, CA, and Karen O. Elliott (husband David) of Hagerstown, MD; her grandchildren, Jennifer Lauren Osen-Foss (husband Travis) of Washington, DC, Matthew Lloyd Osen (wife Melissa) of Davenport, IA; and Martin Logan, Maggie Se Bin, and Gabriel Morgan Elliott all of Hagerstown, MD; a great-granddaughter, Eleanor Louise Osen-Foss, of Washington, DC; and two siblings, Grace Price of Easton, PA and Charles Sandwick, Jr. of Easton, PA.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at 11 AM in the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, 125 Park Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201; where Rev. Suzanne Elliott will officiate. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 1, 2013 from 6:30-8:30 PM in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Inurnment will be in the Columbarium at Park Ave. United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Park Ave. United Methodist Church at the address above or to the Grove Cancer Center, 755 Norland Ave., Suite 100, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
