Carol J. Portmann, age 79, of Chambersburg, PA; passed away in the Chambersburg Hospital on Monday, July 23, 2012. Born in Cleveland, OH, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Stella Rice Duch.
A teacher most of her life, Mrs. Portmann retired from the Chambersburg Area School District in 1993. She was a graduate of Cleveland State University with her Bachelor’s degree and Arizona State University with her Master’s degree in Education. She enjoyed cooking, collecting recipes, sewing, making crafts, painting woodcrafts made by her husband, and especially spending time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Portmann was a member of Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, and The Young at Heart Club.
Surviving is her beloved husband of 55 years, Dr. Walter O. Portmann, whom she married September 1, 1956; her children, Thomas P. Portmann (wife Bernadette M. Kosek) of Chambersburg, PA; Dr. John E. Portmann of Charlottesville, VA; and Catherine M. Dusman (husband Todd A.) of Chambersburg, PA; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Margaret, Thomas, Jr., and Mary Claire Portmann and Rachel Dusman; and one sister, LaVerne Lentz. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Duch, Jr.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 10:00 AM at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg, PA; where Rev. Fr. James R. O’Brien will celebrate. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 26, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA. Interment will follow the Mass in Corpus Christi Cemetery.
