Carolyn Boyer, 89, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on December 25, 2022, in hospice. Born in 1933 in Maryland, she was the daughter of the late Rev Paul B. Lucas and Ruth Lucas.
Carolyn grew up in the parsonage at Second Evangelical Lutheran Church in Chambersburg, where her father was the Pastor. After the death of her grandmother, Carolyn took over domestic duties at the parsonage in addition to maintaining good grades and playing violin. Carolyn graduated from the former Chambersburg High School in 1950. She then attended Susquehanna University, where she majored in math, physics, and German, graduating in 1954. She worked as a math teacher and tutor in the Chambersburg area for many years. She was also employed as a seamstress and was a greenhouse manager at Snavely’s Garden Corner.
In 1949, Carolyn met and fell in love with Robert D. Boyer, an army veteran who became an engineer. They married in 1954 and remained deeply in love until his death in 2016. Together they raised three children. They loved exploring Caledonia State Park and singing together in the church choir. Carolyn was a talented alto singer and gardener, enjoyed a variety of crafts including cross stitch, knitting, and sewing, and loved to read and do math and word puzzles. She continued designing and sewing lap robes for hospice patients in her later years. She will be well remembered for her kindness, strength, and intelligence.
She is survived by her sons Robert D. Boyer, Jr. (Angela) of Indianapolis, IN, and Paul L. Boyer (Linda) of Greencastle, PA; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Carolyn was preceded in death by her husband and their daughter, Ruth M. Eckert (Douglas).
