Charles Haas

Charles R. Haas, 95, a resident at Menno Haven and formerly of 264 West Queen Street, Chambersburg, PA, died Thursday morning, February 28, 2013 at Menno Haven. Born January 15, 1918 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Charles H. and Mary Lulu Baughman Haas. Charles served in the Pennsylvania National Guard with Troop E, 104th Calvary from 1937 – 1940. He was employed at Landis Tool Company in Waynesboro from 1939 – 1943 and called to active duty with the US Army in November of 1943. He served with the 1st Division, 16th Infantry in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe during WWII and was awarded several medals including the American Theatre Service Medal, and the European-African-Middle East Theatre Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and the Combat Infantry Badge. Following his discharge from the military he was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in 1974. He was a member of Zion Reformed Church, the Franklin Fire Company, and Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, all in Chambersburg. He was a horseman in his early years and was an avid hunter all of his life. His beloved wife, Verna I. Gipe Haas, whom he married in July of 1943 preceded him in death on January 30, 2008.

He is survived by his son, Larry J. Haas and wife Faye; his granddaughter Amy Haas; his great-grandson Dakota J. Bitner; his sister Helen Louise Shrader, two sisters-in-laws, Jean Gipe and Betty Gipe, all of Chambersburg; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Haas.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 5, 2013 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Jeffrey R. Diller officiating. Interment will follow at Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM Monday and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.
