Charles Happel, Jr., 83, of Chambersburg (known to some as Pete) died on Thursday, August 27th, at his home. Born November 26, 1931 in Guilford Springs, he was the son of the late Charles E. and E. Blanche (Statler) Happel.
Charlie was a graduate of Chambersburg High School, Class of ’49, as a member of the FFA program. He was in partnership with his brother, Robert, in the operation of Happel Bros. Greenhouse from 1951-1981, and helped farm the Happel farm. He was an employee of N.E. Diffenderfer Plumbing and Heating for thirty years, retiring in 1995.
He was married to Janet L. Horst on January 1, 1957. They have resided at their present home for the entire 58 years of marriage. Surviving are his wife, daughters Susan (James) Latour, Ocean City, MD; Linda (John) Pepley, Lititz, PA; and son Dale (Christina) Happel, Fayetteville, PA. He is also survived by grandsons Sean and Ryan Pepley, granddaughters Jenna and Alexis (Ali) Happel, and nephews R. William and Joel Happel. Other survivors are in-laws Robert and Margaret Rotz, Lois Horst, Leona Crider, Joyce Horst and cousin Miriam Memmi. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Roy E. and Robert W. Happel.
He was a faithful member of the Marion United Methodist Church. In previous years, he was a Sunday School teacher, on the church board, and on a visitation team. For a number of years, he was a walker for the local Red Cross blood drives.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Marion United Methodist Church, 94 Colorado Street, Marion, on Monday, August 31,, 2015, at 12pm. Pastor Chris Renner will officiate. Interment will take place at Maplewood Cemetery, Marion, prior to the service at 10:30 AM, with visitation to follow at the Church from 11-12. A viewing will be held from 6-8 pm on Sunday, August 30, 2015, at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Marion United Methodist Church, 94 Colorado Street, Marion, PA 17235. The family also expresses their appreciation to the caring staff at the US Renal Center, and to SpiriTrust Lutheran for their loving care.
