Charles C. Hockensmith, Jr., age 96, of Chambersburg, PA, went to be with the Lord and his wife, Betty, with his family by his side after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehab Center. Born in Chambersburg, PA, on April 18, 1919, he was the son of the late Charles C. and Edith Gift Hockensmith.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Hockensmith served honorably during WWII, where he participated in the second wave of infantry on Omaha Beach of Normandy on D-Day. As a result of his service, Mr. Hockensmith was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 4 bronze stars and 1 bronze arrowhead. He worked as a machinist at Hess Manufacturing for 28 years, retiring on April 18, 1984. He was a member of Ebenezer United Brethren Church, Greencastle, PA. Mr. Hockensmith enjoyed collecting Eagle figurines, hunting, traveling with his wife after retirement, and coin collecting. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his two grandchildren, who were his world; he would always look forward to the families’ annual trip to Pidgeon Forge, TN.
Surviving is a son, Kirby Hockensmith (wife Glenda) of Chambersburg, PA; two grandchildren, Matthew Hockensmith and Kelly Menicucci (husband Anthony); and a sister, Janice Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Betty G. Hockensmith on November 10, 2014 and two brothers, Donn and Orville Hockensmith, two sisters, Geraldine Gordon and Janet Ellis, and a half-brother, Melvin Gift and half-sister, Marie McClain.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015, at 11 AM at Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, 2509 Black Gap Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Pastor Garry Culler and Pastor Richard Mose will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 13, 2015, from 6 – 8 PM in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA and on Saturday, November 14, 2015 and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will follow the service in Brown’ s Mill Cemetery, where military honors will be provided by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard.
