Charles Manning

Charles (Charlie) Albert Manning, Jr. 84, of Chambersburg, PA passed on to Heaven Saturday, August 14, 2021 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born at home on September 17, 1936 in Fulton County he was the son of the late Charles A. and Goldie E. (Lynch/Fischer) Manning.

He was a graduate of Warfordsburg School (i.e. Southern Fulton High School) with the Class of 1954. Charles later went on to obtain both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from Shippensburg University and all but completed a Doctorate from Penn State University. He was first employed by Greene Township to teach 5th grade at Scotland Elementary School. He later became Principal as well as Regional Principal for several elementary schools with the Chambersburg Area School District. He retired in 1993 after 35 years.

Charles was a lifetime member of PSEA, NEA, and the Mercersburg Sportsman Association. He was a Little League coach for St. Thomas in his younger days. Charles was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where he served on the Finance Committee and was involved with the early childhood education and Sunday school programs. He also enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing, and baking.

He is survived by one daughter, Debra Kase and her husband James of Chambersburg; a son-in-law, Robert Mowery of Shippensburg, PA; a daughter-in-law, Denise Manning of Chambersburg; six grandchildren, Catherine Drachbar and her husband Daniel, Michael Manning, Jr. and his wife Amy, Nicholas Manning, Matthew Manning, Nathaniel Manning and Edward Mowery and his wife Melissa. There are three great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Emilia and Drew and expecting the fourth great-grandchild in September and the fifth in January.

Charlie is also survived by a friend and companion for over 20 years, Beverly Brackbill of Chambersburg and her family who considered Charlie a much-loved stepfather figure. Her children include the late Barbara Brackbill of Elizabethton TN, Brenda Slusher and husband Ben Slusher of Chambersburg, Beth Dunn and husband Mark of Chambersburg and Becky Brackbill of McConnellsburg; grandchildren include Amanda Slusher, Ben Slusher, Thomas Dunn, Alexandra Dunn all of Chambersburg, Caleb Little of Boston and Zachary Little of Virginia; and numerous great grandchildren of Beverly Brackbill.

In addition to his parents Charles is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Layton) Manning; a daughter, Elnora Mowery; a son Michael Manning; a sister, Mary J. Weber and her husband Henry B., who was like a brother to him.

Services will be held 11:00 A.M., Thursday, August 19, 2021 in the St. Paul United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201 with Pastor John Kratz officiating. There will be a repast immediately following the service in the Family Life Center at the church. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the church, 10 A.M. until 11 A.M., Thursday morning as well as from 5:30 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday evening in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202. Burial will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday in Norland Cemetery, Philadelphia Ave., Chambersburg. All are welcome.
