Charles R. “Bob” Mickey, 86, of Chambersburg, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at the Chambersburg Hospital. He was surrounded by his family when he went home to be with the Lord. Born August 13, 1929 in Gettysburg, PA, he was a son of the late Samuel J. and Hazel N. Pennell Mickey.
Bob was a 1948 graduate of St. Thomas High School. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served honorably during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, Bob worked for Horne’s Trucking then became the owner/operator of Bob’s Sporting Goods in Greenvillage and worked part-time as a mail carrier for the Chambersburg Post Office. He then worked at Letterkenny Army Depot as an optical mechanic until his retirement in 1989. Following his retirement, Bob worked for the Buildings and Grounds Crew at Shippensburg University. He was a life member of the NRA, North American Hunting Club, the Patriotic Order Sons of America, Orrstown Masonic Lodge #262, James Chambers Masonic Lodge #801, Valley Forest Tall Cedars of Lebanon # 145, and a charter member of Greenvillage Church of God. Bob was a very talented athlete and played on baseball, football, and boxing teams that traveled across Europe during his service in the Army. He also played softball and was in the Senior Citizen Olympics World Series in Baton Rouge, LA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors. Bob’s number one priority was his family whom he loved very much.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Loretta N. Davis Mickey, whom he married on June 19, 1953; two sons, Timothy L. Mickey, (wife Tonya) of Chambersburg, and Craig A. Mickey (wife Rhonda) of Ft. Wayne, IN; four grandchildren, Jeremy Mickey (wife Danielle) of Chambersburg, Jason Mickey (wife Angie) of Chambersburg, Nichole Bucci (husband Mike) of Fayetteville, and D.C. Mickey of Ft. Wayne, IN; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jack Mickey and Fred Mickey (wife Bonnie), both of Chambersburg. In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by a great-grandson, Sawyer; and a sister-in-law, Wilma Mickey.
A funeral service will be held to honor Bob’s life at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 16, 2015 at Greenvillage Church of God, 5164 Philadelphia Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Matthew Tosten will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens where members of the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will provide military honors. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Greenvillage Church of God at the above address.
