Charles Small

Charles William “Bill” Small, 72, of Chambersburg, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born August 10, 1944 in Chambersburg, he was the son of the late William and Bertha Furry Small.

Bill was a 1962 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. Following graduation, he served honorably in the U.S. Navy. Bill was employed as a police officer with the Chambersburg Police Department for 12 years and then as a security officer at Letterkenny Army Depot for 32 years until his retirement in March of 2007. He then worked part-time as a security officer at Wilson College and the former Scotland School for Veteran’s Children. He was a member of Grace Brethren Church in Chambersburg, Orrstown Lodge #262 F&AM, and a life member of Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion. He enjoyed golf, hunting, and bowling.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathryn Ashway Small, whom he married on June 16, 1967; two sons, Robert L. Small and wife Jennifer of Marietta, PA, and Michael T. Small of Chambersburg; and two grandsons, William M. Small and Andrew “A.J.” Small. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara Bishop.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. John Bayer will officiate. Interment will follow at Lincoln Cemetery where military graveside honors will be provided by the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the funeral home. Members of Orrstown Lodge #262 F&AM will conduct a masonic service Monday evening at 7:00 PM.
