Charles E. Staley “Johnny” age 87, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away at his home on Thursday, October 16, 2015. Born December 21, 1927, in South Mountain, PA, he was one of nine children to Harry W. and Lula Maugle Staley.
Early in life Mr. Staley lived in Mont Alto, where he went to school, He had attended the former Quincy High School. As a young boy, he worked at the Mont Alto State Park and at the state nursery. He loved to play sport, especially baseball. He played baseball for Mont Alto in the Blue Ridge League and Fayetteville in the twilight league. A veteran of WWII, Mr. Staley served in the South Pacific in Guam, Kwajelein, and Japan. While serving on Kwajelein he took part in operation Sandstone, an atomic bomb project. After discharge, he worked at Letterkenny Army Depot for 34 years, retiring in 1983. Mr. Staley was a member of the AMVETS Post 224, VFW Post 1599, American Legion Post 46, the Marine Corps League, all in Chambersburg, and the American Legion Post 606, Ft. Loudon, PA.
Surviving is his son, Barry Staley (wife Connie) of Chambersburg, PA and two step-grandchildren, Troy and Shawn Ray (wife Malina). In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jean Staley in 2008 and eight siblings.
Graveside services will be private at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
