Clara F. Ashway, 84, a resident at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, passed away Tuesday evening, April 8, 2014 at the nursing home. Born May 6, 1929 in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late John C. and Elizabeth E. Snoke Wingert. She attended school in Duffield, PA and was employed for 10 years at the former Martin’s Bakery and Restaurant. She retired in 1998 from The Butcher Shoppe where she had been employed for 20 years. Mrs. Ashway was a member of New Guilford Brethren In Christ Church and served on the flower committee for 28 years. She was a member of the Norland Garden Club and volunteered with Bible Release Time. She enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, crocheting, growing and arranging flowers, and writing poetry. Her husband, James W. Ashway, preceded her in death on April 26, 2000.
She is survived by five step-children, Vernon Ashway and wife Vonnie of Waynesboro, Lloyd Ashway and wife Diana of Chambersburg, Josephine Fishel and husband Donald of Lavale, MD, Kathryn Small and husband C. William of Chambersburg, and Phyllis Waddell and husband Edward of Frederick, MD; twelve step-grandchildren; and sixteen step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Naomi Nicarry of Chambersburg. Aside from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Ernest Wingert; and four sisters, Emma and Hannah Wingert, Rachel Wiles, and Pearl Musser.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at New Guilford Brethren In Christ Church, 1575 Mont Alto Road, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Lawton Jacobs officiating. Interment will follow at the New Guilford Brethren In Christ Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 PM Monday at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the church.
