Frank M. Terrell (Col. USAF, Ret.) age 74, of Chambersburg, PA passed away at home on October 3, 2013. Born August 15, 1939 in Loogootee, IN, he was the son of the late Robert and Gertrude Souerdyke Terrell.
Col. Terrell grew up in the shadow of the Indianapolis race track, and was a lifelong fan of the 500. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the Indiana Guard. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He rose through the enlisted ranks quickly, earning a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Col. Terrell was among the first enlisted members to be selected to attend Officer Candidate School, and was commissioned in 1967. He served in several U.S. and overseas assignments, but was the most proud of his time in the Air Force Recruiting Service, where he held jobs ranging from engineer officer recruiter, to the commander of the Indianapolis recruiting squadron. His final assignment was as the commander of the 03rd Recruiting Group wherein he had responsibility for all Air Force recruiting in over a quarter of the nation. Col. Terrell retired from the Air Force in 1992, having served on active duty for over 35 years. His decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Defense Superior Service Medal, and three Meritorious Service Medals. While serving as an officer, he earned a Master’s degree from the University of Arkansas. Col Terrell enjoyed golf, boating, camping, gun collecting, and motorcycles. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 23 years, Jan Eakle “Denny” Terrell, whom he married on June 9, 1990; two children, Steven Terrell (wife Gina) of Hilliard, OH, and Kristina Farahat (husband Hamdy) of Montgomery Village, MD; and his mother-in-law, Jean Eakle. He is also survived by six grandchildren, among them his two cherished granddaughters, Sara and Megan Terrell, and two siblings, Pam Inman (husband James) and Larry Goldsberry (wife Janice).
Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 7, 2013 at 11 AM at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Ave., Chambersburg ,PA; where Rev. Rick Noll will officiate. The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 6 -8 PM in the church and one hour prior to the service on Monday in the church. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
