Conwell K. Rife, Sr., 84, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away Friday evening, November 8, 2013 at Menno Haven. Born November 5, 1929 in Letterkenny Township, PA, he was a son of the late Paul S. Rife and Alice K. (Huber) Rife. Mr. Rife was a graduate of Shippensburg High School and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict stationed in Japan. He was a life-long farmer and worked at various times with the US Department of Agriculture. In later years, he was a Mail Carrier with the US Postal Service. He was a long-time, active parishioner at Salem United Methodist Church, later at Mt. Pleasant United Brethren Church, and most recently the Greenvillage Church of God. Mr. Rife was elected a member of the Chambersburg Area School District Board of Directors for twelve years, a Past President, and contemporaneously president of the Board of the Lincoln Intermediate Unit. He also volunteered at the Chambersburg Hospital for many years.
Mr. Rife is survived by his wife of sixty years, Mary Alta (Yorlets) Rife, whom he married June 7, 1953; three children, Catherine (Robert) Gallagher of Natick, MA, Barbara (William) Ziegler of St. Louis, MO, and Conwell K. “Bud” (Noreen) Rife, Jr. of Wayzata, MN; six grandchildren, Paul Gallagher of Davidson, NC, George Ziegler of Chicago, IL, Katharine Gallagher of New York, NY, Caitlyn, Ciera, and Chloe Rife, all of Wayzata, MN; and a sister, Mary Ann Kimmel of Lancaster, PA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Paul.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Greenvillage Church of God, 5164 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.
