David E. Bernecker, 89, of St. Thomas, PA, passed away on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Falling Spring Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born February 3, 1926 in Upton, PA, he was a son of the late Clarence E. and Catherine B. (Hopkins) Bernecker.
David was a 1944 graduate of St. Thomas High School. A U. S. Army veteran, he served honorably during World War II. After his discharge from the army, David completed electrical trade school in Chicago, IL. He was employed as an electrician for Horst Electric then later as a maintenance supervisor at the Franklin County Career and Technology Center until his retirement after over 30 years of service. David was a member of St. James United Brethren Church and a life member of the Detrich-Brechbill Post 612 American Legion in St. Thomas. He was a former member of the St. Thomas Community Band where he played the E-Flat Horn. He enjoyed bowling, watching his grandchildren play sports, and his beloved cat, Rosebud. David had a profound love for the Lord.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Hazel I. Bernecker, whom he married on October 10, 1992; three children, Gerald E. Bernecker (wife Kathy) of Chambersburg, Dana C. Bernecker (wife Teresa) of St. Thomas, and Ruth E. Fuller (husband Jim, Sr.) of McConnellsburg; two step-children, Cinda L. Gift and Janet M. Strine, both of Chambersburg; five grandchildren; one step-grandchild; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine S. Bernecker; and two siblings, Glenn E. Bernecker and Helen B. Hoover.
A funeral service to honor David’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at St. James United Brethren Church, 2398 Warm Spring Road Chambersburg, PA 17202. Rev. Murray Stevens and Rev. Ronald Strader will officiate. Interment with military honors provided by the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard will follow the service in St. Thomas Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA, and one hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James United Brethren Church at the above address.
