David Helfrick

David R. Helfrick, 85, of Fayetteville, PA, passed from this life on Wednesday, August 10, 2011, in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born February 18, 1926 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of the late J. Keller and Esther Shank Sheffler Helfrick. As a youth, he attended Washington Township schools in Waynesboro, PA. David, a World War II veteran, served in combat from 1944 to 1947 with the United States Army’s 75th Division in the European Theater of Operations.

He was employed in both the automobile repair and electronics business over the years. As a youth, he worked for Helfrick’s Garage in Waynesboro, PA. In later years, he worked at the Letterkenny Ordinance Depot in Chambersburg, PA. Following that, he worked for the Angle Brothers Pontiac/Cadillac auto dealership in Chambersburg, PA, working his way from mechanic to shop foreman to service manager over a 10-year period. From December 1962 – August 1963, he also taught an auto mechanic’s night school course at the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. Finally, he was employed for 20 years at the former V.T. Angle Sons Pontiac-Cadillac-Buick auto dealership in Chambersburg, PA, retiring in 1976 after serving over the years as an auto mechanic, shop foreman, and service manager. He also owned and operated his own radio and television repair service for 23 years from 1961 to 1984. David was a lifetime member of VFW Post 695 and American Legion Post 481, both in Waynesboro, PA. His interests over the years, in addition to automobiles and electronics, included avid Bible reading, watching college and professional football and baseball, auto racing, jigsaw puzzles, and word search and crossword puzzles.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by a son, David R. Helfrick, Jr. on November 25, 1947, and by his beloved wife of 47 years, Gladys Eleanor Corwell Helfrick on February 15, 1993. Two brothers and five sisters also preceded him in death. He is survived by two daughters, Linda S. Helfrick of Fayetteville, PA, and Dianne L. Helfrick of Chambersburg, PA, and two brothers, Paul E. “Butch” Helfrick of Athens, TX, and Robert H. Helfrick of Waynesboro, PA.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, August 15, 2011 in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Arthur Brown will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service on Monday. Interment with military honors by members of Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW Honor Guard will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Avenue or to the American Heart Association, 417 Phoenix Drive, Suite A, both in Chambersburg, PA 17201.
