David Tschopp

David R. Tschopp, 93, a guest at Menno Haven in Chambersburg, passed away Friday evening, April 11, 2014 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born April 12, 1920 on a farm in Chanceford Township, York County, PA, he was the son of the late David A. and Henrietta B. Tschopp. His family moved to Chambersburg when he was a teenager and David graduated from the former Chambersburg High School.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1941. During WWII he served in the European Theater as a Crew Chief on a B-17 known as the Flying Fortress. He received the Victory Medal, the Distinguished Unit Badge with one oak leaf cluster, and the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 6 bronze stars. David was honorably discharged from the Army Air Corps in September of 1945.
David married Helen M. Smith on August 5, 1945. Soon thereafter he accepted a job with the Aeronautical Systems Division (A.S.D.) at Wright Field, Dayton, OH. David worked there as an Experimental Aircraft Test Crew Chief. While working at A.S.D. he received several awards including a sustained superior performance award.
David and Helen had two daughters, Constance Marie Sweet of Ontario, Canada and Jill Kay Riggs of Granville, OH who survive. Also surviving are two grandchildren, Brian Sweet and Catherine Scott; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Scott, Lydia and Nathan Sweet, all of Ontario, Canada; and a sister, Rose Needy of Chambersburg. David had been a member of the Medway United Methodist Church and served the church in numerous ways. He served on the Pastor Parish Relations Board, served as Assistant Sunday School Superintendent, and as a Senior High Sunday School Teacher. He was a community volunteer and helped to build a girls’ softball field. David also assisted with the FISH program designed to help less fortunate people in the community.
David retired from the A.S.D. in 1976 and later worked as a salesman for the Paint America Company. He retired from that company and moved into the Menno Village retirement campus in December of 1991. His wife had a lengthy illness and passed away on March 8, 1999. After moving to Menno Village, David had also completed volunteer work both on the Menno Village Campus and at South Mountain Restoration Center.
He was a member of George Washington Lodge #143 F &AM and was awarded a 50 year service pin. He was a life member of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW, Burt J. Asper Post 46 American Legion, and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
David married his second wife, Vivian Baker, on August 22, 1998 and continued to reside at Menno Village, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents and first wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret E. Works.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Menno Haven Chapel, 2075 Scotland Avenue Chambersburg, PA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 610 Community Way, Lancaster, PA 17601.
