Dennis R. Ommert, age 65, of South Mountain, PA, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at the Chambersburg Hospital. Born May 7, 1949 in Waynesboro, PA, he was the son of John Ommert and the late Mary Ricker Ommert.
A U.S. Marine, Dennis served honorably during the Vietnam conflict, where he was awarded the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Campaign Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and Good Conduct Medal. He was a 1967 graduate of the Chambersburg Area Senior High School. Dennis worked as a lineman for Sprint Telephone Company, retiring in 2004 after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Marine Corps League, The Vietnam Veterans, and VFW Post 1599. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching the Pittsburgh Steelers. Dennis also enjoyed coaching baseball, softball, coin collecting, and collecting war relics. He was an avid supporter of the paralyzed veterans of America. Dennis has been published in Life, People, and Time Magazines.
Surviving are his four children, Ryan D. of South Mountain, PA; Samantha L. of Maryland; Andrew E. , and Tyler J. Ommert both of South Mountain, PA, one grandson, Mason Snively, three siblings, Donald E. Ommert, Deborah A. Smith (husband Larry), and Sherry L. Bennett, , His best friend, Chris Newcomer; his dog, Frank; and his ex-wife, Debra A. Ommert. In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his brother, Allan D. Ommert.
A Memorial Service to honor Dennis’s life will be held on Monday, November 3, 2014 at 1 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Pastor Murray Stevens will officiate. Military honors will be performed by members of the Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 VFW following the service. The family will receive friend on Sunday, November 2 from 6 – 8 PM and one hour prior to the service on Monday. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
