Dolores (Mitchell) Flood, formerly of Chambersburg, slipped away peacefully in her sleep on January 9, 2019. She was 97 and had been a resident of Elmcroft of Shippensburg for the past four years.
A devoted wife and loving mother, Dolores built her life and raised a family with husband Ross who passed away in 1993. Prior to their marriage in 1948, she had graduated from Chambersburg Business School and served her country with pride in the U.S. Navy WAVES where she was assigned to high security, decoding duties in Washington, D.C. After raising her six children, she accepted full-time employment and retired from Letterkenny Army Depot.
Known simply as "Mom" to many, Dolores was well-loved for her warmth and sense of fun which delighted the people she met. Her many friendships included members of the Salem United Brethren Church congregation where she had been a member for more than 60 years. At 84, she published her life story in book form and she enjoyed sharing copies. She loved to travel and planned several trips for the entire inter-generational family. She had visited Germany, Hawaii and Alaska before making her last cross-country airline trip at the age of 91. She also took great pleasure in her gardens and tending her houseplants.
Born in Black Log Valley, Huntingdon County, on April 5, 1921, Dolores was the daughter of the late Bula (Rabenstein) and Watson Mitchell. She was preceded in death by grown son Gary in 1976 and will be greatly missed now by her other children and their families: sons Larry (wife Linda), Jerry (wife Jen) and Terry (wife Wanda); daughters Connie Grove (husband Ron) and Karen Greene (husband Robert); and extended family member Yvonne Butts-Mitchell (husband Doug, deceased). The family has grown to include 12 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. "Mom" was especially proud that her legacy of military service was carried forward by daughter Karen, sons Larry, Gary and Jerry and grandsons, Ron Grove, Jr., Gary Greene and Kyle Mitchell.
Celebration of Life services will be held Monday, January 14, 2019, at Salem United Brethren Church, 4349 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg. The date also commemorates the 71st wedding anniversary of Ross and Dolores. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by the service at 11:00. The Reverends Jason Bakker, Arthur Page and Ron Cook will officiate. Military honors will be conducted graveside, adjacent to the church. Friends are invited to share in honoring a life well-lived and to join the family for the luncheon in the church social hall following the services. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA. Condolences and memories may be shared on her Book of Memories page at www.geiselfuneralhome.com
