Donald Martin

Donald B. Martin, 77, of Chambersburg, PA, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, PA. Born March 18, 1935 in Shippensburg, he a son of the late Amos and Louise (Besore) Martin. Donald attended Shippensburg Schools and early in his life worked building silos. He was then employed for many years with Ryder Supply Company in Chambersburg where he owned and operated Martin’s Equipment until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of the Chambersburg Mennonite Church, where he served as a trustee and on various church committees. He served on the board of Menno Haven Retirement Community and the Cumberland Valley Relief Center, where he was instrumental in the planning and construction of both the CVRC building near Marion, and the New Life Thrift Store in Chambersburg. He volunteered his time and talents to many community organizations including Shalom Christian Academy and Menno Haven in Chambersburg, and Book Savers in Hagerstown, MD. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, hiking in Pigeon Forge, TN, restoring classic cars, and repairing various items for his family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and vacationing at Chincoteague, VA and in Canada.

Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Charlotte (Landis) Martin, whom he married November 19, 1955; three children, Gregory L. Martin (wife Annette) of Chambersburg, Kathy J. Grove (husband Marlin) of Greencastle, and Bradley L. Martin (girlfriend Barbara Hoover) of Chambersburg; six cherished grandchildren, Tyler, Allison, Megan, Candice, Olivia, and Lauren; one sister, Evelyn Martin of Huyetts, MD; one sister-in-law, Catherine Martin of Chambersburg; and four brothers-in-law, Menno Landis, Jr. of Chambersburg, Daniel Landis (wife Joanne) of Broomall, PA, Rev. Richard Landis (wife Lois) of Mountville, PA, and Rev. Ray Landis (wife Joyce) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Ellis, and Robert.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Chambersburg Mennonite Church, 1800 Philadelphia Avenue, Chambersburg, PA with Rev. Richard Landis and Rev. Jerry Roth officiating. Interment in the adjoining church cemetery will be private. The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 PM Friday, December 7, 2012 at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA.

The family requests the omission of flowers and suggests memorial contributions in Donald’s name be made to CVRC, 4225 Molly Pitcher Highway, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
