Donald Menner

August 31, 1932 — March 30, 2012

Donald E. Menner, 79, of Chambersburg, died Friday March 30, 2012 at Menno Haven Nursing Center. Born on August 31, 1932 in Jasper, Indiana, Don was the son of the late Leo and Lucille Flick Menner.

Don attended public schools in Jasper and left home in his late teens to pursue a baseball career as a pitcher. Soon afterwards, he signed a minor league baseball contract with the Washington Senators and played for the Hagerstown Packets. He was a hard-throwing power pitcher who could mix in a ‘wicked’ curve ball and knuckleball to thoroughly confuse his opponents. During the 1952 season, he pitched to a record of 16-1. When hearing about Don’s record that season, Tommy John (hall of fame pitcher) expressed in 2007 that there were many good players in those years who never got a chance to play in the majors with fewer teams back then.
Don’s baseball career was interrupted by a call to duty, serving with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On December 31, 1955, Don married Mona Lynn Humbert, whom he had met at a restaurant in Hagerstown. After living in Hagerstown and Baltimore for a short period of time, he moved to Chambersburg to take up work at Marathon, and ran a high speed off-set press for many years. During this time, he raised his family of four children and faithfully provided for all of them.

Don will be dearly missed as a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He was a kind-hearted, generous person who enjoyed entertaining and having a good laugh.

Don is survived by his wife, Mona Lynn, a brother; Jim Menner of Jasper, IN; three sons Doug and wife Margaret of Brooklyn, NY, Tom and wife Becky of Chambersburg, PA and Don of Leesburg, VA; a daughter: Carmen Walker and husband Duane of Mechanicsburg, PA; three grandchildren Tara, Jennifer, and James and; three great grandchildren Tasia, Tiara, and Tayona.

Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday April 4, 2012 at 10:00 AM in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by Charles Nitterhouse Post 1599 Honor Guard, will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
