Donald S. Metz, age 88, of Chambersburg, passed away on Friday evening, December 26, 2014 at Penn Hall Nursing Center. Born July 17, 1926, he was the son of the late Norman Edgar and Alma Shank Metz.
A 1944 graduate of Hagerstown High School, Don went on to serve honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II. He then earned his associates degree from Hagerstown Business College. Don started his career with the United Telephone Company of PA in the installation and repair department. He retired in 1990 from Embarq, now Century Link, as a Long Distance Network Manager after 37 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, I.T.P.A., and the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599. He enjoyed hunting fishing and traveling with his wife.
Don is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ruth Hoover Metz, whom he married on July 16, 1950; three children, Betsy A. Metz of Waynesboro, David A Metz (Carol) of Chambersburg, and James E. Metz (Stephanie) of Chambersburg; and three grandchildren, Amanda E., Nicholas J., and Maranda L. Metz.
A memorial service to honor Don’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 2, 2015 at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 750 Norland Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17201. Rev. Rick Noll will officiate. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church at the above address or to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
