Donald Petra

Donald L. Petra, age 84 of Fayetteville, PA passed away in the Chambersburg Hospital on Friday, December 28, 2012. Born October 5, 1928 in Hackinsack, NJ, he was the son of the late Jack Rogers and Marie Kovarik.
A US Army veteran, Mr. Petra served honorably during the Korean Conflict, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star. He was a 1946 graduate of Lodi High School in New Jersey. Mr. Petra was a member of the Charles M. Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg. An avid NY Giants fan, he enjoyed watching football, including college football. He also enjoyed cooking, reading, and feeding the birds.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Gloria O’Brien Petra, whom he married on November 17, 1956; his children Sherylann Petra and Donald Petra; and one granddaughter, Rebecca Petra.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2012 at 11:30 AM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Rd., Chambersburg, PA; where Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his name to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 2325 Country Rd., Chambersburg, PA 17202 or to the National Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation, 11350 McCormick Rd., executive plaza 1, suite 800, Hung Valley, MD 21031.
