Donald E. “Slick” “Gene” Sleighter, 90, of Chambersburg, PA passed away Monday, January 23, 2023 in Magnolias of Chambersburg. Born December 12, 1932 on a farm in Greenvillage, PA he was raised by his grandparents, Norman and Ruth Sleighter.
He was a graduate of Chambersburg High School with the Class of 1950. Following high school Slick served with the United States Army during the Korean War from February 19, 1953 until his honorable discharge February 18, 1955. He was then employed at Letterkenny Army Depot in maintenance management until his retirement in 1988. Slick then went to work as a driver for Sunset Auto Sales from 1988 until 2013 but his favorite job was being “Pap Slick”.
Slick was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. He was a 50 year member of the George Washington Masonic Lodge 143, Chambersburg, Valley Forest Tall Cedars 145, and Harrisburg Consistory. He enjoyed antique tractors and gardening.
He is survived by a daughter, Lynette Fisher and her husband Lynn of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Jason Fisher (Jackie) of Fayetteville, PA, Janelle Barkman (Travis) of Chambersburg and Jared Fisher of Alexandria, VA; four great-grandchildren, Dilynn and Alyssa Fisher and Brooklynn and Isabella Barkman; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife, Margaret L. “Peg” (Lehman) Sleighter who passed away in 2020; a daughter, Charliene Sleighter who passed away in 1981; a sister, Jane Smith Tarner.
Services will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, January 27, 2023 in the Chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 with Rev. Ruth Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawns Memorial Gardens, Chambersburg where military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Friday morning in the funeral home.
