Doris Byers

August 29, 1927 — October 27, 2022

Doris A. Byers, 95, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 27, 2022 surrounded by her family. Doris loved her Lord, her family, history, and sports. She served her Lord by doing her best to trust Jesus daily through life’s greatest joys and deepest sorrows. She dedicated her life to her family, at times laying down her personal dreams to give life and provision to her six beloved children. If you wanted to strike up a conversation with her, all you had to do was talk about the civil war, the latest football game, or a recent golf match. Doris enjoyed life.

Born August 29, 1927 in Chambersburg, Doris was a daughter of the late John and Rhoda Cormany Washinger. She was a 1945 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School and attended the Garfield Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, DC. She was employed as a school bus driver with the Chambersburg Area School District for 29 years prior to her retirement in 1997 and worked as a real estate agent with Ausherman Brothers Real Estate in Chambersburg. Doris was a member of the King Street United Brethren Church where she co-taught the Buds of Promise Sunday school class for many years and sang with the church choir. She volunteered at the Chambersburg Hospital and at Menno Haven. Her husband, Enos M. Byers, whom she married December 14, 1946, preceded her in death on March 29, 2000.
She is survived by six children, Robert A. Byers and wife Rita of Chambersburg, Dennis L. Byers and wife Jean of Newville, James S. Byers and wife Karen of Chambersburg, Donna J. Krum and husband Ron of Chambersburg, Ann E. Browder and husband Brett of Chambersburg, and Carolyn B. Ruch and husband Kenneth of Glen Mills; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-five great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild; and her sister, Arlene Wilcox and husband Lloyd of Chambersburg. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Marian Bolan; and two brothers, J. Richard and Kenneth Washinger.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, December 3, 2022 at King Street United Brethren Church, 162 East King Street, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Ron Cook will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service as well as immediately following the service at the church.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Menno Haven Benevolent Fund, 2011 Scotland Avenue, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
