Doris Guyer

November 25, 1929 — September 28, 2017

Doris M. (Wingert) Guyer, age 87, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her family, on Thursday morning, September 28, 2017. Her loving heart just could not go on. Born in Chambersburg, PA, she was the last remaining daughter of the late Harry B. Wingert and Grace E. Burkhart Wingert, of Chambersburg, PA.

She was a 1948 graduate of the Chambersburg High School, and worked for Shively Motors from 1948 to 1956. In the mid-1960s she worked as a librarian’s helper at the old Stoufferstown School, and in the early 1970s she worked as a short-order cook and cashier at Hamilton Heights Market. Following that she was instrumental in running the family bicycle shop on the Edenville Road.

Doris was a faithful servant of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and for most of her life was a member of the Salem Methodist Church near Letterkenny Army Depot. Most recently, she was a member of the Salem United Brethren Church. She loved having family around the table, talking to and spending time with her wonderful lifelong friends, participating in Bible studies, collecting beautiful things, eating popcorn with her faithful dog, Cody, and planting flowers, as long as they were pink! She also loved children, and the latest loves of her life, and the hardest to leave behind, were her precious great-grandchildren, Carly, Thomas, & Caitlyn Baker of State College, PA; Griffin, Ava, & Ian Wenger of Cincinnati, OH; Alana Guyer of Shippensburg, PA, and Levi Guyer of York, PA. Additionally, she was so much looking forward to meeting the three new grandbabies due to be born within the family this December. Her greatest gift was loving and caring about her family and friends.

Married on September 20, 1952, she is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert R. Guyer, Chambersburg, PA, as well as their children, Caryl J. Guyer Wenger & husband Sam, of Frederick, MD; Dale R. Guyer & wife Darla (Harnish), of Shippensburg, PA; and Jody L. Guyer Kurtz & husband Frank, of Thurmont, MD. Also surviving are grandchildren Janelle C. Wenger Baker & husband Warren, of State College, PA; Jordan D. Wenger & wife Ashley (Gardner), of Cincinnati, OH; Drew R. Guyer & wife Sarah (Wilfong), of Hanover, PA; Dane R. Guyer of Shippensburg, PA; Brelyn R. Guyer of Shippensburg, PA; Sheila Kurtz Horst & husband Jonas, of Clearspring, MD; and Jeremy L. Kurtz of Palmyra, PA. She was sadly preceded in death by grandson, Dylan M. Guyer, and sisters Ruth E. Burkholder & Blanche V. Wenger.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2017, at the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, October 2, 2017, at the Salem United Brethren Church, 4349 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg, with the Reverends Art Page and Jason Bakker officiating. Graveside services will be held at the St. Thomas Cemetery on Pioneer Drive in St. Thomas, PA. Anyone wishing to attend will be welcome. Memorial donations may be made to the Salem United Brethren Church.
