Doris Oyler

January 2, 1923 — November 24, 2016

Doris Katherine Phillips Oyler, 93, of Chambersburg, PA, left the family and friends she loved on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 24, 2016. Born January 2, 1923, she was adopted at 11 months of age via The Christian’s Home of Pittsburgh by Drucilla Kissell Phillips and William Blair Phillips.

Doris graduated from the former Chambersburg High School in 1940. She was nicknamed “Daisy” and was active in school clubs and activities. Upon graduation she worked for the summer recreation program. From 1940 – 1941 she attended the former Shippensburg State Teacher’s College, where she majored in business, was a cheerleader, and a May Day court attendant. Then, during WWII, from 1943-46, she worked evenings doing office work at Letterkenny Army Depot.

Doris and Harry L. Oyler were married June 14, Flag Day, 1942, by the Rev. Clyde Meadows in the King Street United Brethren Church. They lived in Maryland until April 1943, when Harry was commissioned for active duty in the Navy. Doris and her son “Rick” then lived with her parents in Chambersburg until Harry’s discharge on January 23, 1946, their first child’s birthday. They lived on Catherine Street behind the High School for 25 years. In 1974 they moved to Penn National where they lived until 2003 when they moved to Menno Haven.

Doris always loved children and was thankful for her children and grandsons. In addition to raising her children and being involved with their many activities, she enjoyed socializing with friends and family, traveling, and attending club/organization events with Harry.

Doris is survived by her husband Harry, their three sons, two daughters, and five grandsons: Harry “Rick” Laughery Oyler, Jr., his wife Ildiko “KoKo” Segesvary Oyler, and their son Miklos “Mik” and his wife Katelin Quinlan Oyler; Jennifer Oyler Wright and her husband Tom Wright; Susan Oyler Smith and her husband Russell Smith; William “Bill” Phillips Oyler, his wife Trena McClelland Oyler, and their sons Luke and Zachary, and his wife Stephanie Key Oyler; and Emory Cook Oyler II, his wife Cheryl Charles Oyler, and their sons Quinn and Nathan.

In her lifetime, Doris went from a child whose mother offered her up for adoption to a mother of five who greatly enjoyed her family. In her final years Doris was frustrated by her immobility. We, her children, know she is at peace now and moving lightly with us through our lifetimes.

A celebration of Doris’ life will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Paul B. Baker will officiate. Interment will follow in Norland Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Menno Haven Employee Appreciation Fund, 2011 Scotland Ave. Chambersburg, PA 17201.
