Dorothy M. Johnson, 103, of Chambersburg, PA passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at the Chambers Pointe Health Care Center in Chambersburg. Born September 8, 1919 in Bancroft, IA, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Henrietta (Hatten) Mescher.
She was a graduate of St. John High School, Bancroft, IA. Following her graduation, she went to work for the Department of Agriculture in Algona, IA. She relocated to Chicago during World War II, and then moved to Washington, D.C. shortly after the war, where she met George W. Johnson. They were married on August 10, 1946. Returning to the work force after raising four sons, Dorothy was employed for the United States Government as a cataloger with the Military Sealift Command, Washington, D.C. She retired after 10 years and resumed her role as a homemaker.
Dorothy was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. She enjoyed embroidery, needlework, quilting, sewing and reading.
She is survived by four sons; Gary F. Johnson and wife Michele of Fayetteville, Rande G. Johnson and wife Eva Margolies of New York, NY, Kevin T. Johnson and wife Deborah of Lancaster, and Jeffrey E. Johnson and wife Pamela of Winchester, VA; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Kienitz of Titonka, IA; and a large number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, George W. Johnson who passed away June 13, 2007; eight siblings, Mary Gisch, Ambrose Mescher, Leona Mescher, Walter Mescher, Martha McCleish, Edward Mescher, Harold Mescher, and Paul Richard Mescher.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday April 15, 2023 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave, Chambersburg, PA 17201. Arrangements are entrusted to the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, Chambersburg.
