Dorothy (Dot) Nicoll Jordan, 89, passed away on Saturday evening, March 1, 2014 at Menno Haven in Chambersburg PA. Born on August 1, 1924 in the Astoria section of the Borough of Queens, New York, NY she was the oldest daughter of Edna and Benjamin Nicoll. Dot graduated from Garden City High School and Douglass College with a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics in 1946. She married Walter Jordan in 1948 and they lived in Long Island, (Garden City, Levittown & Setauket) New York before relocating to Chambersburg PA in 1996. Walter passed away in 2006.
Dot had a passion for reading and was a member of the Virginia Fuller Book Club in Setauket, NY. After moving to Chambersburg, she was the founder of the book club, Literary Ladies, which still meets today.
In Setauket, Dot was very active in civic organizations including the PTA, the Girl Scouts, the Strong’s Neck Neighborhood Association and the Little Bay Beach Association. Dot somehow ended up being a leader in every organization where she volunteered.
After Volunteering with the National Association for Retarded Children (ARC), Dot was hired as the full-time head teacher of their school in Jamestown, NY. She held this position for several years.
Dot is survived by her children, Thomas Jordan (w. Irene Jordan) of Annapolis MD and Lynn Jordan (h. John Brush) of Mequon WI plus four grandchildren, Eric, Garrett, Leslie, Samantha, a great-grandchild, Jade and her sister Jeanne Craig of Cheyanne WY.
Services will be private. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.
