Dorothy Robinson

June 20, 1925 — June 30, 2011

Dorothy A. Robinson, 86, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at her residence of Menno Haven, Chambersburg, PA, June 30, 2011, after a brief illness. Dorothy was born June 20, 1925, in York, PA and was the only child of Mary Marie Sharar and Charles R. Grim. Dorothy was raised and cared for by Edward and Nettie Black and lived in the Mercersburg and Chambersburg areas until she graduated from Chambersburg High School in 1943.

Dorothy met her sweetheart, Melvin H. Robinson, at the Ace of Hearts roller skating rink in Stoufferstown, PA in 1943. They were married March 2, 1945 in Fairview, PA by Bishop Harvey G. Stoops. Their marriage was sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1951. As a young bride she worked as a typist in Las Vegas, NV and Denver, CO while Melvin served in the US Air Force.

Dorothy was a true and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her family and the gospel of Jesus Christ was the center of her life. She gladly served her entire life in church positions in Relief Society and Primary. Melvin and Dorothy devotedly served many years as ordnance workers in the Washington DC Temple, Kensington, MD. Dorothy was a living example of service to those who knew her. Service and compassionate caring for others was engrained in her very character. She truly loved her neighbors and had many lifelong friends. She had a talent for sewing and was an avid reader. She saw beauty in everything around her and her greatest joy was being a wife, mother, and grandmother.

Dorothy leaves behind a legacy of example, service and love of all things beautiful in this world. She will be sadly missed by all those who knew and loved her. Preceding her in death was her loving parents Mary Marie Sharar Burger, step-father George F. Burger, York, PA, Edward and Nettie Black, her foster family, and many aunts and uncles. Her beloved husband of 65 years, Melvin H. Robinson, passed away May 16, 2010.

She is survived by five children: Melvin H. (Rob) Robinson, Jr., Puyallup, WA; Cherie (Stephen) Oldt, Shippensburg, PA; Sue (Douglas) Zimmermann, Charlotte, NC; Christina (Robert) Sommers, Henderson, NV; and Mark S. Robinson, Salt Lake City, UT; four grandchildren: Andrew S. (Dana) Smith, Farmington, UT; Michael Smith, Sandy, UT; Kristen E. (Tony) Hundt, New Port Ritchey, FL; Katie Zimmermann, Atlanta, GA; and one great-grandchild, Tristin Smith (son of Andrew and Dana).

The family is very grateful to the nursing staff, aides, and all other employees of Menno Haven/Menno Village who showed such compassionate and loving care during the residence of Melvin and Dorothy Robinson.

Her life will be remembered at funeral services on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA with Bryan Fernelius, 1st Counselor, Chambersburg 1st Ward Bishopric officiating. Interment will be at the Brown’s Mill Cemetery, Kauffman Station, PA. The family will receive friends prior to the funeral on Saturday, July 9, 2011 from 12 Noon until 1:30 PM at the funeral home.
