Dr. George A. Layman, DDS, age 74, of Chambersburg, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Monday, October 8, 2012 in his home. Born on March 1, 1938 in Hanover, PA, he was the only son of the late Vernon A. Layman and Edna Mae Coleman Layman.
George served his country as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, earned his Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Penn State University in 1960, and then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1964. He practiced dentistry in Franklin County for over 30 years, with offices in Chambersburg, McConnellsburg and Mercersburg, before retiring in 2000 as president of Layman, Acri, Lehrian Dental Associates. Aside from his general practice, he held membership in countless professional affiliations, including serving as past president of the Cumberland Valley Dental Association. He was named as a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, a recognition by his colleagues as a national leader in the field of general dentistry. An avid reader and accomplished writer, he wrote numerous practice management articles, as well as three books. While his main concern in life was his family and children, his hobbies included playing golf, photography, and traveling to such destinations as Tahiti, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Panama Canal, as well as cruising the Atlantic to Spain.
He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Marie C. Needham Layman, whom he married on August 25, 1962; three children, Kristen Mahoney (and husband, John) of Ellicott City, MD, Patrick Layman (and wife, Alison) of Boulder, CO, and Dr. Holly Layman-Bernardini (and husband, Andrew) of Mooresville, NC; and two grandchildren, Charles Nicholas Mahoney and Nicholas Bernardini.
A memorial service will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, October 11, 2012 in the chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, with Rev. Fr. James R. O’Brien officiating. Interment will be private. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 PM on Wednesday and also one hour prior to the service on Thursday.
