Dr. Howard L. Hoffman, 85, of Chambersburg, died Friday, March 2, 2012 at his residence. Born February 25, 1927 in Carlisle, PA. A 1944 graduate of Carlisle High School, he served with the US Navy during WWII and then received his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in 1949 from Dickinson College. He went on to receive his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in 1954. Dr. Hoffman served his internship from 1954-1955 and his residency in General Pathology from 1955-1959 at Reading Hospital. He received board certification in Anatomic Pathology from the American Board of Pathology in 1961 and in Clinical Pathology in 1969. He was on the staff of The Chambersburg Hospital from 1959-1993, retiring as Chief Pathologist. Dr. Hoffman was on the staff of Waynesboro Hospital from 1959-1964, and Fulton County Medical Center from 1981-1996. His professional memberships included the following: Franklin County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association, College of American Pathologists – Fellow Emeritus, American Society of Clinical Pathologists – Fellow Emeritus, United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and American Pathology Foundation. He was appointed as Inspector of the College of American Pathologist’s Laboratory Inspection and Accreditation Program, serving from 1982-1992. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, The Chambersburg Country Club, Chambersburg Rod and Gun Club, a life member of the National Rifle Association, and held membership in Trout Unlimited, the Federation of Fly Fisherman, the Ruffed Grouse Society, and the National Wild Turkey Federation.
Dr. Hoffman is survived by his wife, Barbara C. Hoffman; three children, Howard L. “Nick” Hoffman, Jr. of Warfordsburg, PA, Carol A. Hoffman of Frenchtown, NJ, and Nancy E. Hoffman of Southern Pines, NC; three grandchildren, Lindsay A. Menz of Mt. Airy, MD, Jennifer L. Hoffman of Frederick, MD, and Andrew H. Hoffman, serving in the US Navy aboard the U.S.S. Eisenhower, Norfolk, VA; and two great-grandsons.
Services and interment will be private. There will be no viewing.
