Earl Elmer Eckenrode, age 93, of Amberson, PA, passed away at his home on Sunday, May 13, 2018, with his family by his side. Born in Amberson, on September 30, 1924, he was a son of the late John Elmer and Margaret Varner Eckenrode.
A WWII veteran, Mr. Eckenrode served honorably in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer, but had also worked in logging and worked at the former Grove Manufacturing for 20 years, retiring as a supervisor. He was a member of the Amberson United Methodist Church, Post 232 American Legion, and the Path Valley Lions Club. Mr. Eckenrode enjoyed hunting, pitching horse shoes, playing guitar, and singing.
Surviving are seven children; Elaine LeBeau (husband Norman “Pink”) of Roxbury, PA, Gary Eckenrode (wife Phyllis) of Amberson, PA, Robert Eckenrode of Amberson, PA, Daryl Eckenrode (wife Carol) of Orrstown, PA, Sharon Goshorn (husband Ronald) of Blairs Mills, PA, Sandy Bowman (husband Dan) of Chambersburg, PA, and Rhonda Weaver (husband Rod) of Amberson, PA; 24 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; and 20 great great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his step-children, John, Roy, and Jim Brennan, and Ruth Ann Smith, and Nancy Sipes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hammond Eckenrode in 1977, a son, Marlin, two brothers, and two sisters, a granddaughter, Heather Cisney, a great-granddaughter, Cardelia Eckenrode, his companion, Audrey Brennan and step-children, Joe and Michael Brennan and Janice Guyer.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018, at 1 PM at the Amberson United Methodist Church, 18889 Amberson Rd., Spring Run, PA 17262, where Pastor Phil Foster and Rev. Darwin Goshorn will officiate. The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service in the church. Interment will follow the service in Amberson Union Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered by members of the American Legion Post 232 Color Guard. Arrangements are entrusted to the Agett-Geisel Funeral Home, Dry Run, PA.
