Earl J. Gaughenbaugh, of Chambersburg, and formerly of Wheeling, WV, died Friday, February 15, 2013 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born on August 22, 1927 in Wheeling, WV, he was a son of the late Raymond M. and Gertrude Welch Gaughenbaugh.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Dougal Gaughenbaugh, daughter, Cynthia Ann Shank and husband Rick, of Hagerstown, MD; son Timothy Brian Gaughenbaugh and wife Carla of Gambrills, MD; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Paul and Raymond Gaughenbaugh.
Earl was a 1946 graduate of Wheeling (WV) Central Catholic High School. He retired in 1983 from the U.S. Postal Service, with 35 years of government service, including employment with Letterkenny Army Depot from 1951-57.
From 1946-48 and 1950-1951, he honorably served his country in the U.S. Army.
Mr. Gaughenbaugh enjoyed sports, playing basketball in High School, where he gained All City and All Valley honors at Wheeling Central High School, in both 1945 and1946. He also followed Notre Dame and Penn State football throughout the years. He was a member of Corpus Christi Cahtolic Church, NARFE Chapter 1063, AARP 2287, the Chambersburg Club, Knights of Columbus Council 1426, VFW Post 1599, American Legion Post 46, and the BPOE Elks Lodge 600.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, February 21, 2013 in Corpus Christi Catholic Church, 320 Philadelphia Ave. Chambersburg, with Rev. Paul Theisz officiating. Interment will follow in Corpus Christi Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM on Wednesday, February 20, in the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
