Edith M. Locke, age 92, of Chambersburg, passed peacefully with family and caring friends at her side on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at Penn Hall. Born in Burnt Cabins, PA on April 9, 1922, she was a daughter of the late Jesse and Margaret Hampton Briggs. Her beloved husband of 67 years, Ralph E. Locke, whom she married in 1942, preceded her in death on March 4, 2009.
As a young adult, Edith worked for Wilford Cornelius at his grocery store in Orbisonia. She then moved to Chambersburg where she opened her first beauty shop in 1956. She later relocated her shop to Fayetteville where she worked until her retirement in 1999. She was a faithful member of Calvary United Methodist Church for 56 years. She was also a member of AARP for 37 years, and the Chambersburg hospital Auxiliary for over 50 years. She enjoyed traveling, cooking and baking for her family and friend’s benefit, volunteering, spending time with her family and friends and spoiling her nieces and nephews.
The last surviving member of her immediate family, Edith is survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews. Aside from her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by six brothers, Robert, Kenneth, Donald, Glen, Julian, and Lewis Briggs; and two sisters, Helen Fogal and Geraldine Kelley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 9, 2014 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 150 Norlo Drive, Fayetteville, PA 17222. Rev. Clyde Deshong and Chaplain Brenda Doyle will officiate. Interment will follow at Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg, PA.
