Edith Arlene “Sam” Rice of Fayetteville, PA, passed away unexpectedly at the Chambersburg Hospital on Wednesday, June 13, 2012. Born May 25, 1936 in Edenville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Ray and Margaretta Mills Burns.
Sam was a 1954 graduate of the former Chambersburg High School. She was a life member of the Marine Corps League Auxillary and the VFW Post 1599 Auxillary. Sam worked for 24 years as a bartender at the VFW, where she retired in 1998. Sam enjoyed fishing, camping, going to Lake Raystown, watching golf, wrestling, and daytime soaps.
Surviving is her beloved husband of 44 years, Charles M. Rice, whom she married on November 14, 1967; eight loving children, Rusty Fetterhoff (Diana) of Harrisburg, PA, Dusty Fetterhoff of Orrtanna, PA, Brian Fetterhoff (Angela “Till”) of Scotland, PA, Carol Hoffman of Chambersburg, PA, Charles Hoffman (Amelia) of Chambersburg, PA, Margaretta Miller (Edward) of Chambersburg, PA, Lisa Orne (Thomas) of Chambersburg, PA, and Sharon “Petie” Hoffman (Rhonda Boteler) of Fayetteville, PA; 24 cherished grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and one sibling, Michael Burns of Cockeysville, MD. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by eight siblings.
Services and interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in her name to the American Cancer Society, 384 Floral Ave., Chambersburg, PA 17201.
